Scuba diving is one of the most enjoyable activities it is possible to do – but remember safety always come first. Here are some simple pointers to ensuring all goes well with your dives.
- Get Proper Training: As we’ve said, training is key. Before diving, you have to complete a certified training course to at least cover basic diving skills, emergency procedures, and how to use diving equipment safely.
- Check Your Gear: Always inspect your scuba equipment before a dive. Make sure your buoyancy control device (BCD) operates correctly, your tanks are full, and all connections and hoses are secure. Familiarize yourself with any rental equipment if you’re not using your own gear.
- Plan Your Dive and Dive Your Plan: Always plan your dive with your dive buddy and stick to that plan. Include depth, duration, and safety stops in your plan. Adjust your plan according to the conditions and your experience level.
- Monitor Your Air Supply: Constantly check your air gauge throughout the dive and manage your air supply wisely. Make sure you have enough air to ascend and complete a safety stop. A good rule of thumb is to turn around and start ascending while you still have half of your air supply remaining.
- Dive with a Buddy: Always dive with at least one other person. A buddy can help in case of emergencies and make your diving experience more enjoyable. Stay within sight and easy reach of each other, and communicate frequently about your condition and surroundings.
